The community garden program at Shippensburg’s senior community, Cottages of Shippensburg, began when Shippensburg Produce Outreach (SPO) started donating fresh fruits and vegetables to the residents. Many seniors are living off of a fixed or low income and it can be difficult to purchase healthy food items. This program allowed them to stop by the office and pick up their bagged groceries. Sometimes residents would even pick up for their neighbors who couldn’t leave their homes.
After seeing how great an opportunity this was for the residents, Cottages of Shippensburg partnered with SPO and the University of Shippensburg and began to create their own garden program currently known as “Grow a Row”. Cottages grows fruits and veggies for SPO who in turn donates to local Churches and community based organizations.
The staff at the Cottages of Shippensburg purchases the plant food and the residents help to maintain the garden by having meetings and picking their own produce. When the weather is nice, residents even deliver items door to door. Extra food is also purchased to share with the residents of Cottages of Shippensburg. “Grow a Row” started out with a garden the size of 15ft by 20ft with 4 raised garden boxes and quickly grown to large 30ft by 40ft with 10 raised garden boxes.
The “Grow a Row” program is an excellent way to support senior citizens and give back to the community.
